Don't Skip Mitsubishi Electric Warranty Registration—and Don't Panic Over Mini Split Heat Mode Pauses
At 7:45 on a Saturday night in February 2020, I was kneeling in the snow with a multimeter in one hand, telling a homeowner her Mitsubishi Electric mini split probably needed a new defrost sensor. Before the warranty part, the defrost story matters because it explains why so many winter mini split service calls are unnecessary. I was trained on gas furnaces first. A gas furnace is simple: when the thermostat calls for heat, hot air arrives within seconds. If it doesn’t, something is broken. A heat pump does not work that way.
It’s a low-and-slow machine. It runs longer and at lower output. It ramps up and down. It pauses. In winter, the outdoor unit regularly needs to shed frost, and that defrost cycle can look like a failure if no one has shown you what normal looks like.
During defrost, the indoor blower on many mini split units slows way down or stops completely. Depending on the model and outdoor temperature, the pause can last anywhere from a few minutes to closer to fifteen. Then normal heating resumes.
The old line that “heat pumps can’t handle cold climates” comes from an era of single-speed compressors and weak backup heat. That reputation is outdated for Mitsubishi Electric’s inverter-driven systems. I’ve watched Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heating models keep up in New England winters that made some furnace owners nervous. But that old reputation created a different problem: owners either expect a furnace-style blast of hot air and think the system is broken when they get warm air instead, or they expect weak air and ignore real problems. - If the indoor unit stops blowing warm air in winter, look outside before assuming failure. Frost on the outdoor coil and a paused indoor blower usually mean defrost cycle, not defect.
- If the system hasn’t resumed after 15 or 20 minutes, or if an error code appears, then you can start suspecting something real.
I’m not an engineer, so I can’t speak to why Mitsubishi Electric programmed its compressor ramps and defrost intervals exactly the way it did. What I can tell you from the service side is this: most “heat mode stopped working” calls we ran in our first three winters ended with no fault found. Not because the product is bad, but because the person controlling the thermostat was never shown what normal looks like.
Registration Is Part of the Warranty
The second mistake took longer to hurt.

A good mini split can still fail in practice—not mechanically, but operationally—because of skipped registration, unexplained heat mode pauses, or a process that ends at start-up instead of at understanding.
The defrost misdiagnosis and the $1,800 warranty gap were preventable with the same habit: don’t call the job finished until the owner understands what normal operation looks like, and until the warranty is actually on file.
That habit costs less than any repair I’ve ever misquoted.
