Your Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pump Isn't Working—Now What?
Look, I run service for a mid-sized HVAC company in the Northeast. We install and maintain a ton of Mitsubishi Electric systems—probably 200+ units a year. And the most common call I get, especially when the temperature drops below 30°F, is "My heat mode isn't working."
It's never at a convenient time, either. Last February, a client called at 4:30 PM on a Friday. Their mini split was blowing cold air, and they had guests coming for the weekend. Normal response time for us is 24-48 hours. I had to triage it on the spot. Here's the thing: most of the time, it's not a hardware failure. It's something stupid.
This article is basically the checklist I run through before I dispatch a technician. If you're dealing with a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump that's not heating, a remote that won't switch modes, or a system that just feels like it's not working right—start here.
1. "My Mitsubishi Electric Mini Split Remote Won't Switch to Heat Mode"
This is honestly the #1 thing I see. Someone hits the mode button on the remote and nothing happens, or it gets stuck on cool. Basically, the remote is either in lockout, or the batteries are dead.
First thing to check: Are the batteries fresh? I know it sounds dumb, but in March 2024, I spent 45 minutes on the phone walking a client through settings before they said, "Oh, the battery icon is flashing." That was the whole problem. The remote was too weak to send the signal.
Second: Look for a child lock or mode lock. On the Kumo Cloud / M-Series remotes (the standard one), pressing both the temp up and down buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds locks the mode. It's a safety feature, but it catches people. The display will show a little lock icon. Hold those two buttons again to unlock it.
Third: Make sure you're actually pointing the remote at the indoor unit. Sounds obvious, but people forget. The IR sensor is usually near the display panel on the unit.
If none of that works: Try the manual operation button on the indoor unit itself (usually under the front panel, a small button labeled 'EMERGENCY' or 'TEST'). Press it once for test run (cool), twice for test run (heat), hold it down for 3 seconds for normal mode. If that works, the unit is fine—your remote is probably dead.
2. "My Mitsubishi Electric Heat Mode Is On, But It's Blowing Cold Air"
Okay, this is the big one. You set it to heat, the remote says it's heating, but the air coming out feels like room temperature or cold. Frustrating, right?
There are three main suspects:
Suspect #1: The system is in defrost mode. Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps (especially the Hyper-Heating models) operate down to -13°F or lower. But to extract heat from cold air, the outdoor unit needs to defrost its coil periodically. During defrost, the indoor fan will stop, or blow cool air for 5-15 minutes. This is normal behavior. If the air is cold for 30+ minutes straight, then it's not defrost.
Suspect #2: The outdoor unit is iced up or blocked. I had a call in December 2023 where a unit was blowing cold air. The homeowner had covered the outdoor unit with a tarp to protect it from snow. The tarp was frozen solid over the top grille. The unit couldn't exhaust air. We removed the tarp, and within 20 minutes, heat was working. Seriously, check for snow, leaves, ice, or anything blocking the outdoor unit's airflow.
Suspect #3: Low refrigerant. This is rarer, but happens. If the lineset is leaking, the system can't transfer heat. Signs include a hissing noise, ice forming on the copper lines at the outdoor unit, or a significant difference in temperature between the refrigerant pipes. This one requires a technician to fix.
3. "The Indoor Unit Is Making a Clicking Noise"
Clicking noises freak people out. And honestly, sometimes it's bad—like a failing fan motor. But more often than not, it's just the plastic components expanding and contracting.
Mitsubishi Electric mini splits have a lot of plastic in the indoor unit (the chassis, the vanes, the fan). When the unit switches from cool to heat, the plastic temperature changes abruptly. It expands. That creates a clicking or creaking sound. This is normal, and it happens more in new installations during the first season as the plastic "seats."
Where I draw the line? If the clicking is rhythmic, like a ticking sound every 2 seconds, that's usually a fan blade hitting something. Or a relay cycling. That warrants a call to a technician. But a random pop or click a few minutes after the unit starts heating? That's just physics.
4. "My Heat Pump Keeps Turning On and Off (Short Cycling)"
Short cycling is when the system runs for a few minutes, shuts off, then turns back on a few minutes later. It's bad for efficiency and wears out the compressor.
Most common cause I see: a dirty air filter. Mitsubishi Electric units have washable filters. They're easy to clean—pop the front panel, slide out the filter, vacuum it or wash it with mild soap. If it's clogged, the airflow is restricted, which causes the indoor coil to freeze up, which trips the safety and shuts down the system. Clean it every 2-4 weeks, especially if you have pets.
Second cause: The thermostat is in a bad spot. If the remote's temperature sensor is exposed to direct sunlight or a draft, it'll read differently from the actual room temp. Move the remote or adjust the sensor location (the indoor unit has its own thermistor, but some remotes have a separate sensor).
Third cause: The system is oversized for the room. This is a design problem. A unit that's too powerful will cool/heat the room too fast, then shut off. I've seen this in bedrooms where someone installed a 12,000 BTU unit for a 150 sq ft room. The fix is zoning or using a lower capacity setting.
5. "The Outdoor Unit Is Noisy / Vibrating"
Outdoor units should not sound like a jet engine. A normal Mitsubishi Electric heat pump at full load is around 45-50 dB—about as loud as a refrigerator. If it's louder, something's wrong.
Most common fix: Check the mounting. The unit should be on a level pad (concrete or a specialized bracket). If it's on loose gravel or an uneven surface, it'll vibrate and hum. I had a client whose unit was rattling against the house siding. We installed rubber vibration pads between the unit and the bracket—problem solved, cost $20.
Second: Ice buildup on the fan. If the defrost cycle isn't working, ice can form on the fan blade. That makes a thumping noise. Defrost the unit manually by turning it off for 30 minutes, then on again. If it returns, call a tech.
6. "I'm Getting a 'Check' or 'Error' Light on the Indoor Unit"
The indoor unit has a blinking LED code. If it's blinking rapidly (like every 0.5 seconds), that's a communication error between the indoor and outdoor unit. Slow blink (every 5 seconds) is usually a sensor issue. Solid light is normal.
Here's what I tell clients: Count the blinks. But don't try to fix it yourself. Write down the pattern and call a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor. Attempting to bypass safety codes is a bad idea. The error codes are specific—like "P1" means high pressure, "E6" means communication error. A technician can diagnose it in 10 minutes with a laptop and MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC's diagnostic software.
7. "The System Isn't Heating Enough—Is It Too Cold Outside?"
Mitsubishi Electric's Hyper-Heating systems are rated to operate down to -13°F. The standard models are usually rated to about 5°F. Below those temps, the system's heating capacity drops off. It's not broken—it's just physics.
Here's the reality check: Per industry standard (AHRI), a heat pump's heating capacity is tested at 47°F and 17°F. At 17°F, the Mitsubishi Electric outdoor unit will still produce about 70-80% of its rated capacity. But at -5°F, you might only get 50-60%. If it's genuinely freezing outside, your supplemental electric heat strips (if you have them) need to kick in. If you don't have backup heat, the system will struggle.
What I recommend: Keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature. Don't set it back more than 5°F at night. Heat pumps work best maintaining a temperature, not ramping up from a deep setback.
